Ever wonder why kids have a never ending source of energy? Watching my kids run around outside enjoying the fresh air and having fun made me think. My children are much happier, more energized, and have better concentration after enjoying physical activity. Everyone can experience these results and feel the fountain of youth by maintaining regular exercise.
Looking for a fun way to get fit? Spend some time with children. As parents, we teach our children valuable lessons, but we also learn a lot from them. Kids want to have fun. They find something they enjoy, take chances on things they never tried, explore their strengths and weaknesses, and are determined to get better at things by practicing. Playing with my kids on the ball field, at the park, running around outside and biking this week showed all of this. We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing!
Exercise creates brain power and enhances moods. When engaging in high paced physical activity for at least 20 minutes, more oxygen gets to the brain creating a release of “feel good” chemicals like seratonin and dopamine. These chemicals help us focus, give us energy, increase memory and mood, raise self esteem, decrease anxiety, and improve our problem solving skills. Kids who spend more time doing physical activities instead of watching television or playing video games have improved brain function and perform better in school.
Creating a foundation for fitness is important. Get out there and get active and you’ll be showing your kids how to endure a healthy lifestyle. Finding an activity you enjoy will motivate you to stay active. As a family, we enjoy bike riding, swimming, baseball, golf and just playing outside. My children often do Beachbody’s home fitness programs on their own or with me. We have built up a fitness library with programs such as P90X, Brazil Butt Lift, TurboFire, RevAbs, Hip Hop Abs and soon to come, Insanity. Sometimes, we exercise together using modifications for beginners. Beachbody has programs for children such as Shaun T’s Fit Kids Club , Get Real with Shaun T, and Tony and the Kids. You can get in shape while laughing and having fun at the same time.
Getting your heart and lungs pumping frequently will make you feel better in every aspect of your life. The more you move, the more energy you will have, and the more you can play. I lead by example now and show people the wonderful benefits of exercise. My children have seen the positive effects caused by a continual effort in consistent fitness and good nutrition.
