These days, when someone wants to give you something for free to try or tell you about some opportunity that is great – regardless of whether they are friends, family members, co-workers, acquaintances or a total stranger – your discomfort level goes up and the wall of wariness creates a barrier between you and the other person. You may even feel annoyed or resentful, especially if you had a past experience of getting something for “free” or getting involved with “the greatest opportunity ever” and it didn’t work out.
And so it was when the Samaritan woman came upon Jesus at Jacob’s well near the Samarian city of Sychar. He stopped because he was weary from his travels and she came at midday to draw water. Imagine how uncomfortable she immediately became, first because there was a lot of animosity between Samaritans and Jews and second because normally Jewish men did not speak to women in public.
Now Jesus could have gone into a sales pitch, right, because he was “selling” something on his travels through their land. But instead, as it says in the article on the ChristianCourier.com site, when he asked her for a drink of water, “He challenged the best from her”. It goes on to say that, “It is commonly the case that when we offer to assist someone who harbors a grudge against us, they will ruffle up and resist. Yet, if they are petitioned for assistance, they surprisingly respond. Jesus appealed to this lady’s kinder instincts, thus eroding the cultural wall between them.”
As Team Beachbody coaches, we have something to offer you and perhaps you have already put up your wall of wariness or you may even hold a grudge, not against us, but against someone in the past who offered you something “great” and your hopes got dashed.
As Jesus did, we want to challenge you to take down the barrier that stands between us and do something for us. That something is to look at your life right now and to see if there is something that you would like to change about it. If there is something that you want to change and you are willing to work and do what it takes to make that change, then we may be able to help you. Maybe not, because regular exercise, good nutrition and making positive lifestyle choices isn’t for everyone. But it may just be the right choice for you at this point in your life.
The encounter at the well didn’t end with just a drink of water, but Jesus saw the opportunity to go further when the Samaritan woman questioned why He was talking to her. He said, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that says to you, ‘Give me a drink’, you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water (John 4:10).
Team Beachbody coaches don’t have a gift from God for you (well, actually better health, better fitness, better self esteem, better self image and better quality of life, to mention just a few benefits could be seen as a blessing from God), nor can we give you the living water that Jesus talks about. But we can give you the “living water” of health and fitness and a true opportunity to change that one thing or one or more things in your life that you need to change.
Are you ready to rise above a past experience, put your discomfort aside and not be resentful when we simply ask you to do something for us? If you are, then let us know if we can help you change the thing or things that you need to change about your life. We are ready, we are willing and we are able, with the Team Beachbody opportunity to help you change your life. But it is up to you to Decide…
