Yesterday, I sent out an newsletter to almost 10,000 subscribers and had the most unsubscribes and complaints of any newsletter that I have ever sent out. The title of the blog was, “When the Going Gets Tough, the Tough Get Going”. Honestly, I can’t imagine what turned people off. My only thought was that it was either mentioning that we had a health care crisis or that people should put their physical houses in order.
The newsletter is pasted in its entirety below and if you know what got people fired up, then send me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org, otherwise, I will remain, “Puzzled in Albuquerque”!
I saw, “When the going gets tough the tough get going” printed on the tag of a Tetley Tea bag when I was a child and I have always remembered the phrase.
I grew up hearing about the hardships my parents faced having both gone through the Great Depression as children and World War II in England as adults. In fact, they came here in 1949 with the allowed amount of luggage and the allowed amount of money and started life here with a young son and an unborn child. They knew what it was like when the going got tough and they were tough enough to get going in response.
I’ve never experienced the true hardships that our parents and grandparents faced and most of us haven’t. But the Great Recession, although it paled in comparison in terms of struggles, should have taught us a number of lessons and reminded us of what our parents and grandparents told us when we were growing up.
What prompted me to send out a newsletter about the struggles that we all face was seeing a moving and beautiful video entitled, “The Essence of Leadership“. What do leadership and struggles have in common? I believe that if we all became stronger as individuals and leaders instead of followers, perhaps the crisis that we faced could have been averted. Oswald Sanders said, “The world is run by tired people” and that is primarily because so few have to do so much.
I believe that it is time that we all stepped up and did the things that we grew up hearing. From, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going” to “Many hands make light work” to “Where there’s a will, there’s a way “and all of the others that we’ve heard so often, and start pitching in to solve the problems that need to be solved.
After my family, my world revolves completely around helping you achieve and maintain the health and fitness that you deserve. We do have a crisis in health, health care and health care costs and taking charge of your own health and wellness would have a huge impact on lessening the impact in dollar terms of the crisis. That in turn would have a far reaching impact on the health of our economy and our nation’s and our own personal security.
I know what has worked for me over the last few years as a Team Beachbody member and coach. Whether it is right for you, I don’t know. What I do know is that today is the day to start changing your life if you haven’t already, putting your physical house in order and that you, too, can be a leader that instead of being part of the problem is part of the solution. If you are already a Team Beachbody member, let’s get going together with the help of my team of great coaches. If not, join us and together we will change our world.
