My realization on the Pino Trail

Posted by howtobefit on August 13th, 2007 filed in Coach's Corner

At about 5 minutes into my run up the Pino Trail in the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque, a teenager stopped me to ask if I had seen anyone on the trail. He said that his good friend had been missing on a bike ride in the Sandia Wilderness and confirming the seriousness of the situation, I had noticed a significant police presence in the parking area when I started.
At the turnaround on my run at about 8,000 feet, I had an arrhythmia and knew right then what I had been thinking the whole way up - I needed GPS tracking and needed to use Wireless Run Tracker so that my wife would and everyone else would know where I was on my solo runs.

The teenager was still missing when I finished my run at 5:00 pm and the park was closed so that a full rescue effort could be undertaken. If he had GPS with him, it would have been easy to find him and get him the medical attention that he might have needed. Now I have to decide whether to carry a GPS enabled phone or wait and buy the new Polar G3 GPS unit when it becomes available next month. You know that I will definitely wait for the Polar GPS because it will be the perfect solution to track my runs on Wireless Run Tracker since there is no monthly fee added to my cell phone bill for the service!
